DIFFUSIONISTEN

Diffusionists address the increasing loss of authentic quality in photographic images. People who never existed, laboratories, devices, and phenomena are—despite supposed photographic testimony—artificially generated. In this art project, a photogenerated world of images is created through the creative use of image-generating artificial intelligence. The indexicality of the photographic images shown in the book is asserted through time, style, composition, and genre and, at the same time, questioned through targeted stylistic breaks, minor imperfections, consistent surreality, and subversive humor.

The documentary and fictional parts of the visual world, which become blurred with the increasing implementation of image-generating AI in the social context, are reflected in the coexistence of historical and contemporary image parts of the supposedly time-traveling diffusionists. Due to their depiction and presentation in context, scientific apparatuses create supposed authenticity, which could only be attested to by diffusionists’ scientific experts. As a layperson, the viewer can only read the image and succumbs to the convincingly presented claim to documented truth out of ignorance.
